2 Billion years ago, a  meteorite* of about 10 kilometres in diameter hit planet Earth at a velocity of 150 000 kilometres per hour forming a crater in the order of  100 plus km in diameter. This website endeavours to present some facts and clear up some misconceptions in connection with the resulting impact structure, referred to as the Vredefort Dome.

* Note that it has become the custom to use the term "meteorite" in connection with the large extraterrestrial body that collided with the earth leaving its "footprint", known as the Vredefort Dome.  A  more suitable term for such a large extraterrestrial body would either be the term "asteroid" or the term "bolide". The latter term is more often used among geologists than astronomers where it means a very large impactor.  Not to complicate matters the term "meteorite",  for the large impactor which was responsible for the Vredefort Structure, will be retained for the purpose of discussion in this dissertation.
